5 Low Cost Cars To Buy And Modify For Summer

One of the most fun parts about being a bit of a motor-head is being able to purchase a low cost car and then modify it into something that goes a lot faster, is a lot more fun and will wipe the smile off the faces of those who look down up it.

There are a number of older machines that have stood the test of time and yet aren’t old enough yet to be seen as classics to be waxed and preened. So, let’s take a look at five of our favourite cheap speedsters.

Daihatsu Copen

This little Daihatsu is a solid little performer and is ideal coming into the summer months. The little convertible can be purchased for only a few thousand pounds, comes with a nice little engine that can be easily modified to increase power and is also a great little handler. It’s a little toy like, but with a few modifications to its wheels and perhaps some body work, you could turn it into something that’s definitely respected.

BMW Z3

Once James Bond’s Car, the little Z3 was not as good looking as it was fast. However, it’s an interesting little car with good handling and a sporty ride. It may not be the prettiest, but there is a definite going forward fast appeal about it. Oh and it’s a coupe again, so it’s ideal for the impending British summer.

Mazda MX-5

The MX-5 can be picked up for pence thanks to its longevity and also not so wonderful ability to keep its value. Japanese imports or Eunos are lower in price and often have a better spec, but aren’t as desirable. Pick up an early 1990s Mazda for around a thousand pound and you can be sure to get most if not all of it back at the end of the year. Engines are bullet proof too, so there should be little to worry about.

Peugeot 406 Coupe

It’s a bigger car than anything else here, but it’s also an attractive machine and one that has the option of a V6 if you have a few pounds more. It can also be modified with some interesting body kits to make it look Ferrari like. There is also some reliability there too, so you might even get a few winters out of it as well.

Alfa Romeo GTV

It’s possible to pick a GTV up for around £3,000 and it’s an attractive summer car, that really has an air of the romantic about it. You’ll have to have an air of the starry-eyed to purchase one, as they’re not renowned to be the most reliable of autos and there is a tendency for breakdowns – it is an Alfa Romeo afterall.

These are the cars to buy, modify and play away with for the summer at little real cost. They offer a lot of fun for very little money and buying one allows you the chance to spend one summer topless.
