Advanced Safety Technology Is Available in New Cars

If it has been some time since you have looked at any new cars, then you might be in for a pleasant surprise when you see the latest technology. It’s not quite as futuristic as George Jetson’s ride that turns into a briefcase, but there are still some neat gadgets nowadays.

Skid Control

Are you one of those people who wouldn’t know what to do when your ride is suddenly swerves uncontrollably? Thankfully, the technology to prevent this chaotic situation is here. This system monitors your speed, steering wheel usage, how you turn, and it calculates the likelihood of a slide. If loss of traction is approaching, the system takes over to prevent a possible disaster.

Automatic Braking and Crash Avoidance

Available on a wide number of new cars, this technology uses black and white cameras and LIDAR to determine the distance from you to the vehicle in front of you. LIDAR is laser radar that sends out a signal that pings or bounces off objects in front of you to determine speed and distance. The driver presets following distance and then sets cruise speed using the cruise control function. If someone in front of you speeds up, you will also speed up to the preset speed. If someone in front of you brakes or slows down, you will slow down as well. Some systems allow the driver to resume control, and some systems will bring the vehicle to a complete stop if necessary.

Lane Departure Warning

This feature is designed to warn a driver when they begin to move out of their lane unless a turn signal is on. This system uses video sensors, lasers, and infrared sensors to determine when your vehicle drifts across the road in either a left or right direction and then warns you accordingly.

Adaptive Headlights

With all this new technology available, you have to question the efficacy of some of these features. Adaptive headlights have been found to significantly reduce accidents. This equipment works by rotating your headlights into your turn. This greatly improves your vision and allows you to take corrective action if necessary.

With all of these newfangled gadgets out there, you might be thinking this might be too much to handle. If it’s been a few years since you bought a new vehicle, you may not even be aware of keyless entry, GPS navigation, anti-lock brakes, or other new systems. Take a drive to your nearest dealership to see what new cars they have to offer.
