When it becomes snow season there is a lot on everybody’s mind especially after the recent polar vortex witnessed in the US. So with snow and the big freeze soon to affect us all how you are going to travel anywhere? Some cars perform terrible in the snow but others are quite amazing when it comes to the winter season. In this article I hope to have given you a good understanding on the best vehicles to use in the snow and cold weather.
Like all the cars I am about to talk about the Subaru Outback comes with all-wheel drive for superior traction on wet or snowy roads. It’s essentially a station wagon version of Subaru’s Legacy sedan with a higher ride height and styling which mimics a crossover SUV. Subaru make one of the best AWD systems ever and the outback offers either of three variations optimized according to the powertrain. It benefits from a robust 7 inch ground clearance and comes powered by either a 2.5 litre horizontally opposed 173 horse power four cylinder engine or a peppier 3.6 litre 256 horsepower six-cylinder version. Winter hearty options include: heated front seats, a windshield wiper-de-icer and heated side mirrors.
Volvo XC70 T6 AWD
Like the Subaru the Volvo XC70 is also a station wagon that’s gussied up to resemble an SUV. Standing 8.3inch’s of the floor, with a 300 horse powered engine, six cylinder turbo charged 3.2 litres. This will definitely have you zooming through winter straight back into summer. It has included front and rear heated seats, a heated steering wheel, heated windshield with heated washer nozzles and headlamp washers, this car will definitely increase visibility and warmth when driving in the snow.
Yet another station wagon, this car is basically an Audi A4 with a higher 7.1 inch ground clearance. A 2.0 litre turbo charged 4 cylinder engine, puts a 220 horsepower to the road with its “Quattro” all-wheel drive system. Best of all it handles more energetically than most small SUVs or wagons over both wet and dry roads. The Allroad includes heated outside mirrors, headlamp washers and rain-sensing windshield wipers, with the option of heated seats.
This seven-passenger family friendly vehicle is the only minivan sold to offer optional all-wheel drive. Its ground clearance is 6.6 inches with a 3.5 litre V6 engine delivering a sufficient 266 horsepower. Heated front seats are installed to please both children and the parents. This car will surely have you powering through the snow with your family to make sure you’re not late for work or children’s parties during the winter months.
BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo
Hatchback Gran Turismo versions have been added to the compact 3 Series line-up for 2014, and come standard with the automakers sophisticated xDrive all-wheel drive system. Offered with a choice of 240 and 300 horsepower turbocharged inline six cylinder engines, the Gran Turismo is about 3 inches taller and nearly 8 inches taller than a regular 3 series sedan; it also rides on a wheelbase that’s over 4 inches longer, which translates into added cargo space and rear seat legroom. While it features a tall 6.5inch ground clearance, it also includes headlamp washers, heated front/rear seats and a heated steering wheel. This car makes the best of winter’s worst.
Dodge usually known for its fast muscle cars, not in this case, dodge have come up with this stunning family vehicle to carry you and 7 passengers up to the snow covered hills, courtesy of their AWD system. This dodge is in most family’s budget range with more than 7inches of ground clearance, drivers of the base journey SXT AWD will appreciate standard heated mirrors and available heated front seats.
This Japanese designed vehicle was given a good dose of its much-needed visual attitude. More power from a V6 under the hood and a third row seat tucked behind a nifty tailgate. Mitsubishi`s little people hauler is designed to be entertaining when the sun shines and even more so when the snow and storm clouds roll in. The 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander is available with all-wheel control technology, whereas the new outlander GT features a super all-wheel control system borrowed from the Evolution. The standard Outlander comes with factory fitted heated mirrors and heated front seats, giving you warmth and luxury when driving in the snow.
The last snow beast I am going to inform you about is the Volkswagen Tiguan. Volkswagen is usually known to produce fast affordable cars, but we now learn that Volkswagen have produced one of the best winter crossover vehicles ever. The 2010 Volkswagen Tiguan is safe, offers the capability of the VWs 4motion wheel drive and electronic stability control systems, and can swallow a decent amount of luggage with its 56.1 – cu FT trunk, unfortunately finding yourself in a 4 motion equipped Tiguan is one of the more expensive vehicles but in return you get standard heated seats, heated mirrors and heated washer nozzles.
