Just when you thought it was safe to talk on a plastic cup with a string going to another without the NSA listening in via Satellite technology – now it seems your car is the latest surveillance tool, potentially much more invasive than the government, as it will record everything you are doing. Things like your speed, acceleration, miles you drive, deceleration, and how hard you take the turns. Of course, this couple with any cellphone usage while driving between locations will also be watched, along with seat belt use, and who knows what else in the future – and believe you me that future is nearly upon us. Let’s talk.
Indeed, there was an interesting piece in the Wall Street Journal by Leslie Scism published on August 5, 2013 titled; “States Farming Is There: As You Drive,” and it describes their latest technology, which if you install it on your car and if you drive nicely, you could be favored for a drastic reduction in your auto insurance – call it the; “good driver discount” and like a good neighbor, we’ll be watching you? Your every move that is, while driving. There system will also know where you park the car, it’s exact location, and “your speed relative to the posted speed limit,” but that’s not all, if you install this now, you get “free Ginzu Knives” and operators are standing by.
Between the analytics of online social networks, the cookies following you as you surf the Internet, and all those awards programs, plus the cable company, the telephone company, and your ATM, credit card usage, trust me you are under watch 24/7 these days. Consumer be warned. My question is; is this going too far? Well, you don’t have to sign up for the States Farming Auto Insurance “safe driver” program, but if you do, you stand to save a lot of money if you obey the rules. They are not alone, other major insurance carriers are doing the same, more to follow.
Just starting out driving, you might not have a choice, as the difference in price could be drastic. And it’s not that your OnStar system isn’t following you already, or your Smartphone GPS, in fact if your car is now following you, it’s just more duplicate information for yet another source, and I bet the government, police, and other agencies will be able to subpoena it if they want too. So, it could clear you of a crime, or convict you depending on where you go, what you do, how you drive, and whom you associate. I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.
