The Suzuki Jimny was launched at the Auto Expo in the year 2004 and is expected to come to India this year. The vehicle will be launched in the mini SUV segment and positioned between Maruti Gypsy and Grand Vitara. It is a compact 4×4 off-road vehicle and is widely recommended for its price, as well as the rugged, light and stylish look it offers.
Maruti Suzuki Jimny will offer an all-alloy 16-valve 1.3 litre engine multi-jet diesel engine, which comes with great performance and high fuel efficiency. The engine configuration of the car is 1461 cc, 4 cylinder direct injection common rail that gives a high power of 85 bhp at 3750 RPM and a maximum torque of 200 NM at 1750 RPM. The engine is equipped with a five-speed manual transmission, which performs well without losing power. The suspension system comes with a 3-link rigid axle with coil spring at both ends.
Suzuki Jimny has large windows that offer awesome visibility and creates a greenhouse effect. Its design includes bigger and aggressive new bumpers, wheel arches and front grille, which support vertical slash design. It also has a new air intake on the hood, giving it a more aggressive look.
It has a 5-speed gearbox and a good 4-wheel drive system with three driving modes such as 2-wheel drive, 4-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive low for extreme off-road conditions. It offers a part-time 4-wheel drive system and has no centre differential or viscous coupling. Its vacuum-locking hubs help to shift from 2-Wheel Drive to 4-Wheel Drive while travelling at up to 100 km per hour and shifting to low range is achieved by stopping the vehicle. New Jimny is available with electronic push-button four-wheel drive, which is achieved by stopping the vehicle with the clutch depressed and transmission in neutral to select low range.
The Jimny offers a variety of variants in several parts of the world, depending on the local requirements. In Europe, it has one version known as Evolution and in Brazil, it has four versions such as, ‘4ALL’, ‘4SUN’, ‘4WORK’ and ‘4SPORT’ with many varied features. While the ‘4SUN’ has a sunroof and is a comfortable adventure soft road vehicle, the ‘4SPORT’ is a thoroughly off-road variant, oriented without bumpers and has high attack angles, a winch and off-road tyres.
Maruti Suzuki Jimny appears to be an ideal compact off-road vehicle for Indian consumers. It has excellent interiors, which is more comfortable as well. It is under 4-metres in length and can thus qualify for lower tax rates. Once it hits the Indian roads, the Jimny will compete with other compact SUVs and off-road vehicles such as Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha.
