With an eye on the luxury SUV market, the largest passenger car maker of India, Maruti Suzuki, plans to introduce at least three sports utility vehicles in India over the next 3 years. Making its mark in the SUV segment, Maruti is all set to launch the XA Alpha, which was showcased as a concept vehicle in the 2012 Auto Expo.
Directly taking on the Renault Duster and the Ford EcoSport which are making big waves in the SUV genre, Maruti has thrown their own challenge here after studying the Indian market on the potential for a product of this nature.
In XA Alpha, the ‘X’ denotes the cross-over category, the ‘A’ signifies the utility vehicle segment and the ‘Alpha’ represents the trendiness and newness and the fact that it is going to be youth loaded.
So what is the reason for this enthusiasm? Let’s take a closer look at what will be the most successful car launch in 2014.
XA Alpha is based on the Swift platform and will be launched in both the petrol and diesel variants. There is talk of the engine being a 1.3-litre DDiS diesel one with 90PS and 210 NM outputs and the 1.4-litre K-series petrol one that produces 95 PS and 130 NM. This compact 4 metre long car, is designed for customers wishing to enter the sports utility segment.
The Auto Expo 2012 version has a roof-mounted high intensity head lamps. The bold and aggressive grill carries the Suzuki logo. The lower part of the front grill is clad with heavy duty bull bars with a water-fall crease integrated and the upper part has blue accents incorporated. The front lamps with a hawk eyed theme are an extension of the grill.
The interiors of this five-seater car look chic as well as ingeniously styled with a rally car style rev-counter as well. And with the some of the features like AC with climate control, power windows, remote fuel filler, electric door mirror, steering mounting controls, leather seats, remote boot, rear defogger, fold-able rear seats, rear armrest with cup holders and sun roof, XA Alpha is here to stay on the roads.
The best safety feature of the SUV is Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution, other than the normal safety features like 2 airbags, parking sensors, and fog lamps.
The XA Alpha looks good with its typical SUV lines, sharp nose, big wheel arches and muscular design that a lot of SUV’s are adapting nowadays. If Maruti can hit a price target of 6 to 8 lakhs then it will be a stylish alternative to all the other compact sedans and premium hatchbacks.
