Renault Pulse – A Small Car With Luxury Unlimited

Renault India Limited, a subsidiary of the French car maker Renault S.A, established their own production facility in Chennai in 2010 as a joint venture with Nissan. Renault Pulse, a 5 seater small car launched in early 2012, has already become competitive in the Indian hatchback market.

Renault Pulse, a modified version of the Micra, comes in seven versions; 3 in petrol and 4 in diesel. The petrol versions are RxE, RxL and RxZ and the diesel ones are RxL, RxL optional, RxZ and RxZ optional. In late 2013, a Voyage edition of the Pulse was also launched with an internal touch screen multi media and navigation system.

The Pulse has a sharp front with H-4 follow-me head lamps, a hexagonal black grille with chrome lining, fog lamps, a small bonnet and a small front wind screen. The bumpers, ORVMs and the door handles are body coloured. The side profile is attractive with graphics on the doors, tinted glass and 15″ alloy wheels (for higher variants). Higher variants have a roof spoiler with fitted stop lamps, a rear defogger with timer and a rear wiper/washer.

The interior is spacious with an arched roof and comes in two different themes for low and high variants. The cabin has a dual tone dash, cup holders and bottle holders. Higher versions have 5 door keyless entry, a key answer back function, a day/night rear view mirror, a 12V power outlet, reading and boot lamps and an illuminated start/stop button. Power windows, power steering, manual AC (automatic for higher versions), integrated music system with AM/FM radio and a roof antenna are provided.

The safety features include a headlight off and ignition key off reminder, driver airbags (passenger airbags are found in higher variants), child lock facility, engine immobiliser, speed sensing auto door lock, rear parking sensors, tilt and telescopic steering, anti-pinch function on diver’s door and electric ORVMs.

The Renault pulse petrol engine has 1198 cc volume, 75 bhp, 104 NM torque, 5 speed manual transmission with a fuel efficiency of 18.1 kmpl and the diesel engine has 1461 cc volume, 63 bhp, 160 NM torque giving a mileage of 23.1 kmpl. The brakes are ventilated disc type at the front and drum type at the rear. Dimensions of the Renault pulse are 3805 mm length, 1665 mm width, 1530 mm height, 2450 mm wheel base and 251 litres boot space.

The prices of this hatchback are approximately Rs 4.42 lakhs for RxE petrol and Rs 7.23 for RxZ diesel optional. The main competitors of the Renault Pulse are the Hyundai i10, the Maruti Swift and the Chevrolet Sail.
