How To Soften Stiff Leather Seat Covers

Leather seat covers are preferred by many people because they give the car an elegant look. They are also easy to clean; therefore, you don’t have to worry leaving your children in the car.

While the covers have these advantages, they tend to give an ugly look to your car when they become stiff. If you don’t have money to buy new ones you don’t have to worry. This is because you can easily soften the covers.

The first thing that you should do is to wash the entire seat cover using liquid leather cleaner. Here you should rub the cleaner into the entire leather surface and then let the cleaner soak into the seat for a few minutes. You should then wipe the excess cleaner from the cover using a paper towel or clean cloth.

You should then use saddle soap and water to clean the surface of the leather covers. For ideal results, you should pay special attention to any dry and cracked areas of the seat cover.

Once the cover is thoroughly clean, you should apply a color restorer. Here you should apply the restorer generously and rub it in. If you are unsure of the right color restorer to use, you should ask an expert to help you. You can also check the color code at a label which is usually placed inside the driver’s side door.

Once you have applied and rubbed in the color restorer, you should wipe away the excess using a clean cloth or paper towel.

To protect the covers from water damage and to keep the covers softer and supple for a long time, you should regularly apply mink oil on them.

While mink oil is effective in its working, you should avoid it especially if you have light-colored leather seat covers. This is because the oil tends to darken the leather; therefore, applying the oil on light-colored covers will give the covers an unappealing look.

These are the steps that you should follow for you to soften still leather seat covers. To prevent the covers from getting hard, you should avoid placing them under direct sunlight. You should also prevent harsh chemicals from getting into contact with the covers.

If you follow the above steps and the leather cover does soften, chances are that the cover is too old and you have to replace it with a new one. To ensure that the new cover lasts for a long time you should buy it from a reputable store.
